Like Goldschmidt’s Passacaglia and Partita, this engaging work was considered lost for nearly seventy years until it was unearthed in a publisher’s archive in Vienna in 1994. It has all the hallmarks of the early Goldschmidt: vibrant energy, contrapuntal skill and virtuoso orchestration combined with a sharp wit. In six short movements and scored for a small orchestra, the Suite includes a vigorous March (in 5/4!), a desolate and haunting Sarabande, a mordant ‘wrong-note’ Gavotte and concludes with a bracing, driving Tarantella.
