After studying under Aloys Kontarsky among others, Steffen Schleiermacher specialized as a pianist in 20th-century music * Numerous CD recordings, including the collected piano works of John Cage * Performed with various leading orchestras; recitals and lectures in several continents * 1984-88 directed the Gruppe Junge Musik at the Leipzig Academy * 1989 founded the Ensemble Avantgarde * Many scholarships and prizes * His works mainly include works for chamber ensemble where he focusses on rhythmic-metric organization * Takes up Greek mythology in works such as Der Gesang des Aspyrtos (1985), Kreon (1987) or Sisyphos (1996) * His chamber music often has scenic aspects, such as his Ceremony for chamber ensemble (1988)
