Orpheus and Eurydice, Trouble in Tahiti

By Sarah Baird Knight, David Schotzko

Harrison Birtwistle's 40-minute scena, The Corridor, receives its U.S. premiere at Merkin Hall in New York City with conductor Brad Lubman and SIGNAL. "His new work, composed for a soprano, a tenor and six instrumentalists, lingers upon a specific instant in that story: the moment Orpheus turns to view Eurydice, thereby consigning her to oblivion. The music — urgent, astringent and ruminative by turns — is some of Mr. Birtwistle's most direct and potent." (The New York Times) MORE...

In a rare break from his globe-spanning tour schedule, with engagements as far-reaching as Los Angeles, Jakarta, New York and Tokyo, the five time GRAMMY–nominated veteran composer and pianist discovered fresh inspiration in a small cabin near the Montalvo Arts Center. In this serene setting, Benoit crafted Botswana Bossa Nova and Will's Chill, two unique pieces featured on his new album, "Earthglow." MORE...
